she stood, vulnerable, waiting
waves of jeers cast upon her
cold stares
her life as the different
hands on hips, defiantly exposed
cold
aasplashes
aaaaaof so-called humanity
hardballs hurled in hatred
ignorance deflected
she dared to say
quietly, firmly,
i am
me

Powerful words and image here. I loved the hardballs hurled in hatred…so painful for thoise who are different in any way. Brilliant poem.

Lillian, The visual structure of this fabulous poem mirrors the remarkable image so perfectly! I love how your line breaks bring me up short and make me read again. This is a delight 🙂

Hi Jilly — so happy to read your response over my morning cup! Took me a few weeks after seeing this exhibited at the MFA to figure out how I wanted to approach it. Glad you enjoyed.

The MFA is on my wish list. A visit to a great gallery or exhibit always sparks poetry. It took me a few weeks to stop gasping after the Women of Vision (NG) exhibit came to Orlando. THEN I could write about it. Art begets art.
