Low Tide Morning

So many seaside two-weeks
in this place with you.
This time, different.

Roused awake, I leave our bed
step outside to the dawn’s cool.

Jetty exposed at low tide
long and hard, a battering table
for the single industrious gull.

It hovers, takes aim, releases
crack……scallop shell hits
unyielding rock. Stays firm.

The gull swoops down,
picks up shell, rises, hovers
and lets go, again and again.

Morsel quickly consumed,
wings flare to catch the draft and soar.

I follow its path until chill seeps in
bare feet suddenly cold
high tide’s tangled seaweed nearby.

Back with you, under rumpled sheets
my hand hovers, drops down
rests upon your chest, like yesterday.

And yesterday’s yesterday.
Every day, since that day
I feel your every breath.

Inhale, exhale.
Yes, you are here
with me.

I love how this moves from the visceral, real seaside to the wonderful, poetic “yesterday” and breath. Kudos 🙂

So nice to see you over my morning coffee! 🙂 Thanks so much. We really did watch this one lone gull, over and over again, drop this same shell. It was so determined! All that work for that little morsel within. Kind of like people sitting and using those utensils to dig into lobster….that’s a lot of work for those morsels! And yes, we are thankful for every day….especially since a near-death experience in Oct 2013…but all is absolutely a-okay and we are rejuvenators! I still do put my hand on his chest like that…everytime I wake up before he does 🙂 ooooh probably shared too much here. That’s what my morning coffee chats do to me. Have a great great day and so glad you like the poem.

Stanzas 7 and 8 are especially wonderful. Nice work.

Thank you so much! Somehow, I never made it over to your site….huge faux pas on my part. Have now meandered over — what beautiful poetry you write! So your reply is all the more appreciated!
      Hope you’ll stop by again!
