Haiku Warning

Rooftops cold, lifeless.
No sharing. No caring. Dead
metaphorically.

Values depleted.
Hopper’s view of the future,
stark warning. Resist.

Jarring emptiness.
Where were you when it happened?
Democracy failed.

I love the dystopian touch to this haiku, Lil! The jarring emptiness, the values … depleted, and the overall sense of ominous gloom are palpable and can be felt 🤍🤍

Lill, I was pleased to read the Haiku poem you wrote. Von was especially fond of Haiku. Currently I am in the Washington, DC airport waiting for a flight to Burlington, VT. My great-niece is getting married Saturday. Joyce

The painting does look rather dystopian as if “there is nothing to see here”. I guess that’s the end goal.

I agree with Melissa about the dystopian mood of the image, Lill, and I love how you captured that in your haiku. I think most people will remember where they were when democracy failed.

oooh! Your vibe here feels so desolate to me. I like the coldness here and how well you created almost like an echo and an eeriness.

Lillian, in the times we live in, its hard not to project the angst onto everything, even a painting done well before our current troubles and yet the bleakness of Hopper’s paintings is foretelling of the alienation which is a good part of the trouble…

Hoppers painting does have a stark brutalist feel, doesn’t it? I like your triple haikus. It’s almost the same kind of unity you would see in a Korean sijo. Very nice. Thank you for posting this.

Your few words make a big statement. This is what poetry is all about! Well done.

You’ve captured the often bleak, alienation of Hopper’s work in your trio of poems. Very timely, too, as democracy is dying all around us here in the US.
