Ode to Julia

Julia’s delectable mousse au chocolat,
my annual nod to France’s Noel.

Best qualité chocolat
les oeufs: yolks and whites separated
unsalted butter and deep dark espresso
splash of citrusy Grand Marnier
sugar only to slightly sweeten.
Whisking, whisking,
beating, beating,
licking fingers,
licking whisk.
Final touch, the folding.
Soft-peaked egg whites
into sinful chocolate mixture.
Airy deliciousness carefully spooned
into grandmother’s crystal goblets.
Gently placed on refrigerator shelf
until its late night serving.

Christmas Eve dinner done.
We sit quietly savoring
this melt-in-your-mouth dessert.
Julia’s delectable mousse au chocolat,
our annual nod to France’s Noel.

Written for Tuesday Poetics at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets around the globe. Today, Sanaa is pubtending and asks us to write a poem about food! And yes, I do make Julia’s Mousse au chocolat every Christmas! The page for the recipe in this book is well spattered and smeared with chocolate and has my notes all over it. It is truly delicious!!!

It is sooooo chocalotty and literally so light….it melts in your mouth. BEST recipe ever…..and unlike a lot of chocolate mousse you get in a restaurant, there is no gelatin in it! It is truly divine!

    What a yummy poem!

Julia will never live at our house. We only pretend to cook here.

Your comment made me laugh out loud! I have kept this cookbook for years and years….decades really. But the ONLY recipe I’ve ever made from it is the mousse au chocolat! I could have torn out the page years ago and kept it in a notebook or something…but having Julia’s cookbook makes me feel a bit more accomplished 🙂

Just reading your poem “Ode to Julia” brings a smooth and rich chocolate taste to my mouth. There are so many delicious recipes in that book. It is impossible to know how many millions of people, home cooks and professionals, that she has influenced with that book alone.

Exactly! All though I must admit, it is the only recipe I’ve ever made from it! I’m a bit of a scammer, keeping the entire book!

Oh, you are a tease, Lill, with your ’delectable mousse au chocolat’! I’m going to bed soon and will be dreaming of it all night! I especially love the ‘deep dark espresso’ and the ‘splash of citrusy Grand Marnier’ in the ‘sinful chocolate mixture’.  You made these lines erotic:

    ‘Whisking, whisking,
    beating, beating,
    licking fingers,
    licking whisk.’

Our great Xmas sweet dish is a boozy English trifle, layers of jelly, sponge, custard and wonderfullness.

However, I am now severely tempted by your mousse au chocolat. I can smell it already….

Wow, wow, wow! This poem is incredibly evocative, Lillian 😍 I love this part; “Soft-peaked egg whites into sinful chocolate mixture.” Sigh .. thank you so much for writing to the prompt 🩷🩷

Thanks, Lil, for letting me learn about Julia Child. “Mousse au chocolat” sounds so scrumptious!

We had not heard of Julia Childs until some months ago when Sarah Lancashire – herself one of our national treasures – played her in the series “Julia” which we loved on many levels – have you seen it on your side of the Atlantic?

    Great work Lillian!
