This is not a snow globe
this is me seeking refuge
slipping mentally inside,
beautiful crystal orb.
This is not a snow globe
but a world disrupted.
Lies pummeling us everywhere
beliefs shaken, in disarray.
Wellbeing, within our grasp.
Shake loose the tyranny.
Set it down firmly
and stop the madness.
This is a snow globe.
Sentries within trust us.
When their world is shaken
they know we will reset the calm.

Written for Tuesday Poetics at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets around the globe. Today we are asked to write an object poem and begin with the words “This is not a ….” We are asked not to simply describe the object, but to relate to it. How does its existence affect me….what does it mean to me….how do I relate to it at this moment. Photo is the snow globe on our coffee table … a Christmas decoration I’ve had for many years. I love to tip it and see the beautiful shimmering “snow” swirl inside.
The great reset! I love your image of slipping inside the snow globe, an escape into inevitable calm.

I love this poem about your snow globe. I have a snow globe that has crystals and a dinosaur bone in it that I bought in Venice Beach from an artist years ago.

There has certainly been chaos in our “snow globe” this year, with lies plummeted everywhere. Prayers that the snow globe regains its calm!

A lovely retreat inside a snow-globe would be a nice place to reset.

A beautiful Snow Globe! Perhaps it could be a symbol for our time. Though shaken and everything seems to be falling all around us… we remain firm and resolute and it will all settle down in the end… until the next time.
Loved your poem… you are girl interrupted!!

I love the interplay between you and the people inside, as well as that between a sense of despair and a sense of hope… this is lovely!

I’ve always loved snow globes, since I was little, and bought a huge one for my daughter when we were in New York all those years ago. I have a little one from Southwold, one of my favourite places on the Suffolk coast, which sits on the windowsill next to my desk. So I gasped when I read, ‘this is me seeking refuge / slipping mentally inside, / beautiful crystal orb’. The metaphor of the shaken globe fits the current situation in the world so well.

A fitting representation. Even from here, so many of us can’t wait for it all to settle. The storm effects us all……globally.

Very relatable. It has felt like being inside a snowglobe being shaken by a child.
