Three Chord, Twelve-Bar Blues

You loved me Joe
braggadocio
impresario,
only to go.

I’m singin’ these blues,
you still my muse.
But I remember  long ago
I pleaded, don’t go.

But you left me alone
strummin’ the twelve-bar blues.
My spirit so damn low,
heart’s dyin’  like indigo.

I had fun with this one…..tried to write a poem as a 12-bar blues composition.
The chord progress of a 12-bar blues is I – I – I – I – IV – IV – I – I – V – IV – I – I
Translated to a rhyme scheme, I used AAAA-BBAA-CBAA.

The video is a short description of how to create and play the 12-bar blues chord progression. Fun to listen to.

Written for Quadrille Monday at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets. Kim hosts and asks us to include the word BLUE or a form of the word in our poem of exactly 44 words, sans title.

I read your poem and watched the video and wished I had my keyboard to hand, Lill – my husband banished it to the back of the shed some years ago as he was fed up with listening to me practising! I tried singing your quadrille to the twelve-bar blues – the rhythm fits, I love the words ‘braggadocio’ and ‘impresario’, and the pun in the final line!

You made me smile, Kim. Never did I imagine someone trying to sing it to the actual 12-bar blues! Fun fun fun…..it was like putting a puzzle together to get only 44 words and to get the right rhyming scheme as if they were the chords! But it was quite fun to do! 🙂 Thanks for the challenge 😉

Miss Lillian, hey, you and I were on the same wave length. both lovers of the blues. Reading your poem I could hear those 12-string slides.

Lovely! The computer I’m on has no speakers so I had to come visit on my phone to listen to the piano lesson. Made me a little sad that I never learned to play the piano.

I love this! One of my favorite songs to play as a teenager was a 12-bar-blues tune, and this little video took me right back to those days.

This is very interesting and creative, Lill. I sang along with the part where he gave the demo on the video.

Oh this is fun, and the music is uplifting, so the words don’t destroy you and drag you down so damn low!

Very clever. I thought about doing something about the blues (ended up not), but it never occurred to me to actually base the form on, well, the form!

This was a creative exercise, converting the 12-bar to a rhyme scheme. Well done.
