The Deck is Stacked

With a thin cylinder of ash,
barely clinging to the Lucky Strike
pressed between her coarse chapped lips,
she slammed down the jack of hearts
and said to no one in particular,
Well, that’s that,
just another one for the discard pile.
Where in the world is that damned joker?

My husband said “What is that about???” Glad to see your comment. Her “character” just plopped into my head, and I drew with words. Kind of a character sketch? Very different from what I usually do. Also a sad statement on the cards being stacked sometimes against the less fortunate.
Nice to see you over my evening glass of wine! 🙂

What a clever play on words here, Lillian. I read a few times, to make sure I didn’t miss anything. The whole piece is on the tight green felt (I think that’s card table color) – everything working together. Love the title and the joker bringing the piece to a close. And, Lucky Strike, I remember the box – my grandmother was a smoker…and many nights I fell asleep to all my grandparents playing a game of Scat at our kitchen table (they visited often)
Very entertaining, while having so much more meaning than smoking and card play…

Yay…..so glad you liked it and discerned the layers of meaning here. I was hesitant about it…never used the “d” word in a post. Sure do enjoy having you read my words….color me happy on this beautiful day! Off to yoga!

        Excellent 🙂
And, I got a bit more comfy with the whole cussing thing myself – sometimes nothing else is quite as forceful as a wee bit o’ profanity 😉
