Go in and out the windows . . .

Shut off the radio.
Cadence that kicks
rhyme that sticks.
Like ear muffs close exits
on cold winter days.

I don’t even own a car
but it’s driving
through my ear canal.
Drive it to Panama instead,
out through those locks.
Out of my ear drums.
Quit base thumping,

oh just snare it!
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Where are you, Aretha?
Lift the needle,
Just put on the B side,

Written for dVerse, the virtual pub for poets where today Linda asks us to explore surrealism in poetry. She tells us surrealism in poetry is “the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations.” To me, this sounds a lot like stream-of-consciousnes writing….which is what’s happening in this poem. Well…..I’m a bit dense as to what surrealism really is (or is that an oxymoron???) but stream of consciousness led to this. And truly, if you hear this ad on the radio, it does indeed become an ear worm! And, in terms of surrealism, when in doubt, why not have a bit of fun? 🙂

Those little ear worms can become quite insidious! Surreal??? Well, I’m not sure I hit the mark but the idea of an ear worm, literally a worm in one’s ear . . . that’s surreal, right?

This is such fun, Lill, and I like the repetition of the song title, emphasising its ear worm quality. I also love the phrase ‘tickling incessant tune’ – like an itch in your inner ear that you just can’t reach!

Well…..wasn’t quite sure how to hit the mark with surrealism in poetry so yep….decided to have a bit of fun with stream of consciousness writing and see where it took me. 🙂

My ear worm is “Taking care of business–every day; taking care of business in every way!” I do adore stream of consciousness poetics–they lead to surreal places and funhouse faces

Somehow, when I thought of stream-of-consciousness I thought of this silly ad that is often on early morning radio — the station my husband has on every morning that indicates weather etc. It is a maddeningly catchy tune! So my pen just went from there….not sure it it’s surrealistic, but I did have some fun with it and some days, that’s just the right thing to do! 🙂

Well….if truth be told, I am NOT a poet and in so many ways I am out-classed here at dVerse. I sigh loudly with some of the prompts that include rhyme scheme, particular forms, etc and struggle mightily. Here….I wasn’t really sure what surrealism is in poetry so just went with the idea of stream-of-consciousness writing and for some wierd reason, this ridiculous radio ad/jingle came to mind. It does drive me crazy when I hear it …. so when in doubt, have a bit of fun. So that’s what I did! 🙂

OMG Lillian. That jingle should be illegal. It is tantamount to mental torture, an insidious cruelty !
This was a great write. I smiled reading it, then fully laughed when I listened to the actual jingle.
