Would that we all could be
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod,
sailing and bobbing along
on beautiful misty seas.
Snuggled together in our boat
lullaby waves softly lulling,
drifting slowly under the stars
off to the shores of Neverland.
Never the hatred,
never the strife.
Never the sadness
never the Covid-19.
Yes, I’ll be Wynken and you be Blynken,
both with our lids shut tight.
Smile with me and together shall we
nod off to the shores of Neverland.
Sarah is hosting Tuesday Poetics today at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets. She asks us to write about boats. For me, the first thing that came to mind was the poem Wynken, Blynken, and Nod. My mother often read it to me when I was very young….always just before bedtime. The poem was written by American writer and poet, Eugene Field and first published on March 9, 1889. Photo illustration is from the actual book my mother read to me from, Volume One, Poems of Early Childhood, in Childcraft in Fourteen Volumes, published by the Quarrie Corporation, Chicago, in 1947. I’ve obviously also taken liberty with Peter Pan’s Neverland!
Love this!!! Love you!!! N

I remember them! What a lovely memory and what a sweet illustration. I’ve just pulled out my copy of “The Golden Treasury of Poetry” and my Wynken, Blynken and Nod are a bit more goblin-y. It would be lovely to be able to close our eyes to all the trouble going on at the moment and sail away to somewhere wonderful. Wistful sigh.

I love this! In these somber times, we are so in need of a little light-hearted imagining. I want to be in the boat too, sailing along where the words social distancing and pandemic have never been heard!!

Yes….in these challenging times I find myself needing to meditate a bit before I nod off!

If only. We do want that, the comfort and assurance given children through through rhyme and song, to just go to sleep and sleep tight and all will be well in the morning. Great take on the prompt.

What a wonderful poem… both yours and hers! It has been a very long time since I read this one.
I am with you… you be Wynken, I’ll be Blynken, and we’ll both Nod off into a world quite different from the one we are experiencing today.

If only it could be this easy, but I’ve definitely had some dreams these past months in which the coronavirus just dissipated and was gone.

Yep…..I pray for a vaccine every night. If Salk could come up with a vaccine to eradicate polio, I’m hoping the same can happen with Covid!
