if I put on lacy anklets
chalk hopscotch on my sidewalk
tie these grey locks into pigtails
and read Golden Books,
will everything be fun again?
Written for Open Link Night at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets. I’m “tending the pub today” and look forward to reading all the posts. Photo taken a few weeks ago at the Corvette Diner in San Diego’s Liberty Station – our waitress’ feet!
It sounds like it could be Lillian, it’s so tempting to play hopscotch again! 💜

I know, right? Those anklets just made me think of my childhood days. Did you every play Ollie Ollie Over with a ball and you and another player on the other side of the garage roof, throwing the ball over the roof and yelling that when you finally succeeded in getting it high enough to go over? Ah…if the only challenges we faced today were hopscotch and ollie ollie over! 🙂

That would be wonderful Lillian. I’d never heard of Ollie Ollie and it sounds like a marvellous game! 😀 xxx

I do get discouraged by the news….so here in San Diego, I walk outside and feel the sunshine! 🙂

I’m sure that helps.

Lovely concept. I’d have to roll up my levis, put grease in my hair and shoot marbles.

Hah! I had a small velvet bag for my collection of marbles. I had the best agates that we used to call “cat eyes” …. and we would trade them as well. But never our shooters! 🙂

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were that easy! Still learning to adult at 6+ decades, while sucking on lollipops!

Adulting is sometimes still hard….even in my seventh decade! 🙂

I’m not a great believer in fashion being the answer any questions, but the sunshine, that’s different.

Ah Jane…..I sure agree about the sunshine. But I must admit, if I were to put on these anklets and maryjane shoes and perhaps a short skirt….I might be tempted to skip down the sidewalk and that would be fun 🙂

This brought back memories when life, well for the most part, was fun. Not that I consider it can’t be fun now, it can be if we put our minds to it. I am chronically happy.
I miss swings the most – oh for the freedom of childhood.

I’m right there with you, Anna. I am generally what is called a “Pollyanna” which means an optimist. I am almost always happy and seeing the good side of things. But oh yes…..sometimes I do wish that naivety of youth could be ours for just a bit longer. Perhaps that’s what’s so fun about playing with 3, 4, and 5 year olds? All the wonderful make-believe and giggles! 🙂

after the doom and gloom of news I doubt there can be a retrieval of that youthful innocence …
but we should all try 🙂

We MUST! There is good in the world…it just doesn’t shine as much in the news! 🙂 So, perhaps a little skipping down the sidewalk would make us smile 🙂

If only it were that easy, Lillian. But the next best thing is hanging out with a just-turned-three year old who’s just starting to play make believe and is an optimist like you! We chuckle and have fun every time I’m with her and it’s just so much fun. Very close to being like a kid again. 🙂

Exactly! We all need to find our inner child….as often as we can 🙂 It’s good for the psyche and the mind too 🙂

The poem and photo bring back memories…hopscotch was a part of growing up….my sisters used to wear shoes and socks like those in the photo…JIM

I just chuckled when I saw her socks and shoes! 🙂 I think we all must find somehow to access our inner child as often as we can. There is so much wonder in the world….we just need to look for it, right?

Very cute, but I am afraid the answer is no! Time moves on and so do we!

Well…..it’s one reason why I love being with younger children or even seeing younger children in a store or restaurant. I do think somehow we all need to find our inner child occasionally. There is wonder in the world….we just need to look for it. Younger children seem to find it much easier that we do as adults.

It is sad when energetic children lose their drive in order to conform or act proper. Love my grandchildren and the hope they represent!

Yes…..glad you caught that here. That is something we could all use more often…those rosey eyed glasses, that look of wonder at the simpler things in life. 🙂

that photo takes me all the way back to my childhood! and your poem is eerily similar, especially the lone about the hopscotch and sidewalk that I wrote a few days back in remembrance of my late sister. i would equate childhood games to fun again, for sure.

Hi Gina…..did you post it to dVerse? I’ll have to look back for the poem. My grandchildren are now 8, 11 and 13….two 11s and two 13s. How I enjoyed playing with them, creating puppet shows, singing and dancing to Rafi, coloring and playing make-believe when they were little. That time of wonder when their eyes get really big just finding a caterpillar on a leaf! 🙂

no I have not Lillian, it is just jottings in my notebook now. I can feel the joy of being a grandparent from your description of things you all do together, they are at a special age indeed to be blessed by your creativity and company, I know I treasured my time with my grandfather and he taught me so many life lessons through games and play. Many blessings to you and thank you for generously sharing a special part of your life.

hmmmm….well, I’ve never seen anyone get hurt playing hop scotch (except for maybe a skinned knee) or reading Golden Books. I sure enjoyed my second childhood as a parent with my children when they were very young; and then my third childhood with my grandchildren when they were very young. There’s something about the ability to play make-believe and see wonder in simple things 🙂

The important thing is that you’re as young as you feel.
