On a rainy summer day, melted cherry popsicle juice puddles on kitchen countertop. The now bare, but somewhat red-stained stick, is a walking bridge from stainless steel sink’s edge to sticky stuff. It’s a veritable picnic spot for sugar thirsty ants. Our kids, unaware of the insect invasion they’ve created, sit on the faux-brick linoleum covered floor playing with colorful legos.

It’s Haibun Monday at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets. Today, Gina is tending pub and asks us to write about a picnic. Haibun: short prose (cannot be fiction) followed by a haiku. Photo from pixabay.com
I could do without the ant invasion. This was a fun response to the prompt.

Oh those ants.. sometimes they come even without such an invitation… the good news is that they disappear when summer gets warmer (at least here)

Ants are ok outside, but not friends inside. Sounds like the ants are the ones who enjoyed a picnic.

Not exactly the kind of picnic I had in mind … although the ants sometimes visited our picnics as well! A unique response to the challenge.

Nice perspective on popsicle juice as ant’s debauchery.

Those pesky ants–nice take on the prompt. Texas picnics garner fire ants, which are no fun at all.

Those sugar ants will find what they want, quick. I wonder if they have a keen sense of smell- LOL.

Ants, bees, whatever came along were attracted by the food, of course. It wouldn’t be a picnic without them!

Don’t want the ants though you painted a delightful summer moment with the kids playing their lego toys. Welcome back Lillian and hope you had a grand time.

Long for those days again where the innocence of my boys reigns once again. Then, it was a daily blessing (Bane at times) and now an occasional time with grandchildren as I remember their father and my heart swells again with the love I have for them all – cherry popsicles and all… Thanks for the word picture reminders! Love you!!

A creative response, Lillian! I remember when one daughter had food up in her bedroom that we didn’t know about–until the ants!

A picnic for ants and debauchery! They knew where to come in from the rain, Lill! My husband is a big kid. He leaves stuff on the worktop and then wonders why there are ants all over it.
