Raise a Glass . . .

Drawn to a metaphoric life-style
she sparkled and effervesced
through a bubblicious youth,
toast of the town.
Aged now,
she sits beside her Christmas tree,
mulls over memories.
Clutches sachets of anisee seed,
crushed cinammon sticks,
ground cloves and citrus peel.
Low heat radiates
as embers die nearby.

Amaya hosts Tuesday Poetics at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets. She asks us to think about secret ingredients…be they in a recipe or a poem. “Think subtle but noticeable.”

Raise a Glass talks about life in metaphors….from the champagne-like effervescence of youth; to the earthy sweetness of old life, like a mulled wine, commonly known in Scandinavia as GLØGG and in Germany as GLUHWEIN/glow wine.

Pub opens at 3 PM Boston time. Come join us!

She sure is! 🙂 A little mulled wine beside the Christmas tree — that sounds like a lovely way to enjoy a Christmas and reflect on your memories past.

I think this is a wonderful way of growing old… I think there is still some champagne in me… but I do mull over wine and rock with beer too.

Hah! Your comment made me smile, Bjorn. No beer for me……but I think I’ll be bubbly till the day I die.

Thank you, Grace. To me, the best part of warm mulled wine, in particular Swedish glogg, is using it almost as aromatherapy! 🙂

I love the fizziness in the opening lines, Lill, the way it settles into the mulling and mulled wine by the Christmas tree, and ends so aromatically!

I am an old southern girl from a teetotalling family. I make my egg nog like my great grandmother who was taught by her mother. You enjoy the wine I will enjoy the egg nog and we both shall have happy times.

Remember, dear, you are what you drink. I was going to write about the ingredients in a fine wine, but passion rode roughshod over my pen, and the state of the world beckoned me.

Ah yes……I most definitely prefer wine, mulled or not….over egg nog which curdles my tongue and beer which just smells of hops and sours my mouth! 🙂

This is so good. I love the rhythm and sound throughout. The end is melancholy, but maybe it doesn’t have to be.

It’s kind of true, right? At leas, I think so. Especially during this Christmas season, I find myself mulling over memories, old photos, days with my folks etc.
