Primal Desire

Desperate emerald envy.
Brownish grey chameleon
scampers across dirt path,
seeks scintillating shrubbery.
Ah . . . relief,
greening on a leaf.

I’m hosting dVerse today, the virtual pub for poets. It’s Tuesday’s Poetics and I’m asking folks to write a poem that includes their birthstone. For example, if you’re born in May, your poem must include the word emerald; January birthdays, garnet; April folks, diamond; etc.  Pub opens at 3 PM Boston time. Come on over!

Great poem! I think I prefer him green over brownish-gray.

Love these lines especially: ‘desperate emerald envy’, ‘seeks scintillating shrubbery’, and ‘greening on a leaf’. That chameleon is pretty. It reminds me of the one my son had recently. He and his girlfriend bought it together. They thought it was male so they named it Carl, only to discover it was not male, so then they named it Carly. Unfortunately, she didn’t live very long, but she was a fun addition for a while.

Glad you enjoyed. Hmmmm…..me thinks I prefer chameleons in the out of doors rather than in my home! 🙂

Btw, the emerald birthstone is big around here. My mom, best friend, and granddaughter all have May birthdays.

I was so happy to find this photo at pixabay….many of the photos didn’t have the chameleon green…or if it was green, it wasn’t on leaves. 🙂 A fun one to do.

A very creative illustration of how to work with your prompt, though lizards geek me out a bit. I discovered that June uses Alexandrite as birthstone; a really cool expensive gem.

I really found it interesting to learn about alexandrite in your post! A few others have added some very interesting information as well. Glad you enjoyed this one … and yes, I totally agree with you. I prefer the chameleons and lizards scampering away from me…rather than near me! 🙂

🙂 Me too. For some reason, when I thought about emerald, I thought about a chameleon. Go figure! Actually, at first I thought about the “Yellow Brick Road” in the land of Oz…but obviously, that’s not green! So…hmmmm….somehow my mind jumped to a chameleon???

I can see him scampering across the dirt path. No self-respecting chameleon wants to take on the color of dirt, I guess! Great imagery, Lillian! (and thanks for removing my boggled entry).

Emeralds always take me back to the Wizard of Oz. The colors were so vibrant, (though just glass). At least it keeps your chameleon safe, whew

Lovely. A precious stone is not artistic, the way it behaves, so the envy is understandable. And the chameleon ends up in that which is even better, even if it is a chameleon. Really enjoyable.

So glad you enjoyed. I decided to take the word a very different way…away from the gemstone but still a green that was very much wanted 🙂 And the photo I found really showed off the green! 🙂
