Looking Up, I Wonder . . .

Does the sun, obscured by gray clouds,
feel like she’s brushing clammy cobwebs
from her perspiring face?

Do stars sputter when meteorites flash by,
hogging their solar spotlight?

As the moon waxes,
does she feel guilty about her expanding curves?

Does the sky feel belittled
when her brilliant blues blend with ocean hues,
blurring her celestial hemline
with saltwater slurps in a hazy horizon?

Are clouds frustrated
when winds blow them off course?

Do tides falter
when lunar rhythms lose their beat,
as if the maestro’s baton
has developed a score of its own?

Looking up, I wonder . . .

Written for dVerse, the virtual pub for poets, where today Bjorn asks us to write a poem that consists only of questions. And indeed, we are looking to the skies as Cape Cod is under a tropical storm watch tonight and tomorrow, expecting residuals of Hurricane Jose.

The sun, the moon… I love how you used human emotions and vulnerabilities here. Enjoyed this.

So glad you enjoyed, Vivian. Written while we were in Cape Cod where watching the ocean and the sky are daily rituals 🙂

Lovely metaphors & inquiries–your questions are superb. Your last stanza is killer.

Thanks, Glenn. Enjoyed this prompt. Alas, we are back from Cape Cod…never did get to OLN on Thursday…enjoying our ocean respite too much. Will need to go there just to read your Buck story…I’m assuming you added another chapter/verse? 🙂 Will do so in a bit.

Ok, that waxing moon thing is just perfect! My new excuse is ‘I’m waxing”
    Love this poem, Lil!

Now you have me wondering at those clouds: “Are clouds frustrated
when winds blow them off course?” The winds must blow those clouds all over.

Yes….do you supposed they have their paths in mind and then….woosh….along comes that pesky wind? 🙂

These are the questions the ancients pondered and we are pondering still, Lill. Such gorgeous imagery in those clammy cobwebs and sputtering stars! I smiled at the lines:
    ‘As the moon waxes,
does she feel guilty about her expanding curves?’
    and
    ‘Does the sky feel belittled
when her brilliant blues blend with ocean hues,
    blurring her celestial hemline
with saltwater slurps in a hazy horizon?’

Glad you enjoyed. Somehow, while on Cape Cod, looking at the sky and the horizon and the ocean is just what you do….so….voila!

So much I love here… there is a feeling of a child asking questions. Some things you cannot answer really. I also got to think about the BC comic strip that I think would fit some of the questions… Especially the frustrated cloud works for me.

Exactly! And just when you think you know the answer….whoosh, along comes the wind and everything changes course! 🙂

    Do tides falter
when lunar rhythms lose their beat,…this sent me into quite a whirlwind of imagination. I can just imagine being an uncertain tide…shall we shan’t we? Are you sure we ‘re on High Tide? Isn’t it a Bore today?…

“…her brilliant blues blend with ocean hues”
Is such a gorgeous image, even if the sky does feel belittled. But, I always thought they (sky and sea) were trying to mirror one another in admiration and love.

….except when the storms blow in! 🙂 Or the fog covers all and it’s like the sky says, “forget it….I’ll just cover you with this clammy grey/white fog so no one can see your beauty! 🙂 Glad you enjoyed.
