School was officially out for the summer. But somehow, Bell was lost. A precocious first grader, tall for her age, she’d ended up in an empty hall. I can’t miss my bus! Ma will be so mad! Where is everyone???
She saw a weird machine-thing hanging on the wall. Climbing on it, standing tiptoe, her hand just reached the window. Oops. The black handle-thing fell off. The machine buzzed. Bell pounded on the window and screamed for help. Standing by her small charges in the driveway, Mrs. Verizon heard the ruckus. She hurried inside to find the distraught Bell.

I had a horrible feeling the phone was going to leap off the wall and strangle her. Must stop having these thoughts…Nice interpretation, Lillian, made me smile 🙂

Never! I saw this photo and first thought of a phone on the wall in a prison hall…..shook my head and decided we all need some humor in our lives so went this way! 🙂 Always happy to hand out smiles.

Yep — even though she had no idea she could use it to phone someone….it sure made a good step ladder so she could reach the window! 🙂

Bell and Verizon. Too funny! I had thought this might be disguised as a sort of parable about the phone companies. Fun! Nicely done, Lillian.

Oh yes…..and the idea that our youth today have no idea what a wall phone is….having grown up with a cell phone in their hands. I also once wrote a haibun about a young mail carrier’s first day on the job where he just dumped all the “junk mail” (catalogs etc) on the lady’s porch because he had no idea what the “Letter” slot was for on the door! (since he is so familiar with email, snapchat, etc) 🙂

I had to read the comments to understand your references – we have neither of those companies in England!

So sorry for the enthnocentricity of the piece. So think about the young children there who have only grown up with cell phones and look at those red “closets” on the street and wonder what they’re for???? 🙂
