Sydney Haibun

Last night we sailed beneath the promise of a full moon. Standing on our deck above the ship’s wake, black diamond water glistened in lunar sheen. We awakened to a new day, hearts filled with gratitude and love, in Australia. We stand now, feet firmly on the ground, spirits soaring as we gaze together upon Sydney’s iconic bridge and opera house. The journey continues.

full moon graces sea
waves alit with wondrous glow
lunar toast to love

Shared with DVerse. Apologies again to my readers as we continue on this amazing journey: Oct 25 to December 2. Two cruises back-to-back with very little time or ability to connect to the Internet. Thus I cannot read from my dVerse poet friends’ posts. Once back to Boston, shall be in my normal writing AND reading pattern. Hoping you will excuse me.

It was amazing to see, and right off our ship’s deck. Feet firmly on Boston solil again…although jet lag is in full gear. Sydney was 16 hours ahead of Boston….exhasusted by 10 pm….awake from 2 to 5 AM and then slept till 10:45 AM. Patience needed….it wil all work out. Back to writing for dVerse and posting today — posted one for fun yesterday too. Will be glad to get back to my early morning reading with hot coffee in hand. Have missed all of you! 🙂

It was indeed! Just back on Saturday — working through laundry, a serious case of jet lag (our last 5 days were in Sydney and it’s 16 hours ahead of Boston), and Christmas preparation. 🙂 Discovered nonalcoholic ginger beer in New Zealand and hope to find a good brand here 🙂

The adventure is always worth the laundry and lag 🙂

I love the haiku at the end of this wonderful haibun sent to us all the way from Oz. A true haibun in the purest sense.

I always revel when I get a haiku praise from you! 🙂 Back home now….working on adjusting and getting through the jet lag. Last 5 days in Sydney….actually the whole trip was Singapore, Bali, Australia and New Zealand….most of the time 14, 15 and 16 hours ahead of Boston. So it’s tomorrow there now if that makes sense. My body still doesn’t know what present tense it’s in! 🙂

It was a marvelous journey – trip of a lifeimte. Disheartening to come home to a different country. I keep telling myself, we must not let hatred and division win. We must revel in goodness.

Oh Rosemary, how we loved Australia! I’d done so much research and we were able to see so much. Our last 5 days we rented an apartment on Pitt Street and strolled the botanical gardens, including a wonderful aboriginal tour; visited the modern art museum and the NSW Art Gallery, did a cliffs walk that started past New Bondii and ended at Watsons Bay where we had fish and chips at Doyles, ferried back to Circular Quay, then ferried to Manly Bay and went to the aquarium there, walked to the other “side” of Manly Bay and watched the surfers and had an absolutely delicious meal at the Pantry; walked the Rocks an went to Susanna Place Museum (fascinating) and at at Ottos on Circular quay — delicious. Also took the Blue Mountains train to Katoomba, got on the Explorer bus for a few stops, ultimately getting off at Three Sisters, climbed the 1000 stairs down and then hiked across the valley to the cable car we took back up the mountain. Got on and off the Explorer bus to have a lovely meal at the Rooster, a delightful French cafe. Also toured the opera house and happened to be there when the full orchestra was practising and when the ballet was in rehearsal! Bought some breakfast supplies at Woolworth and Coles, including Tim Tams and learned how to do the Tim Tam Slam 🙂 On our last day took the train and then the bus to Featherdale Australia’s wild Life Sanctuary near Blacktown. We went in the early morning when all the animals were active….including koalas, kangaroos and wallabys. Saw a mama wallaby with her joey’s head resting out side her pouch and then, when we were the only ones there, and she was just hopping on the sidewalk by us, the joey hopped out!!!! and hopped around a bit, got licked by its mama and then hopped back into the couch!!! Amazing! I’m sure I’f forgetting some things….on the ship we stopped in Brisbane, Darwin and Bay of Isles. Such a beautiful country!!!
Learned that flip flops are called thongs……..sweaters are jumpers……….chips are fries…….and the call that was often done “Aussie Aussie Aussie…..Oy, Oy, Oy! :
