Junie Z and I,
we had a lot of fun
watchin’ Winky Dink and Me
eatin’ PB and J sandwiches
in front of her black and white tv.
But she liked Gene Autry
that singin’ cowboy,
and Roy Rogers and Dale
croonin’ Happy Trails to You,
like it was just for her.
Me? I was the silent type.
Who would guess it now.
The Lone Ranger was my guy.
No sissy singin’ – just that masked man
ridin’ into those far off hills.
So imagine my surprise
hearin’ good ole Gene
on the radio today
preachin’ at me in song,
There’s no back door to heaven.
And I guess he’d know,
at least in the eyes of Junie Z
after all these years,
but not for tone-deaf me.
Couldn’t resist putting up a more light hearted one for the prompt. Take a listen — ah the childhood memories of me and Junie Z! Posted for Dverse Tuesday Poetics, a poem somehow related to “doors.”
Lone Ranger all the way for me, too!

Masked men are sexy Zorro!!! he was my guy. Probably where I first developed for swords, fencing, and samurai. This is just so much fun. I love it when you write in this voice. roy was just too goody goody and ol’ Gene, well, he sang at the weirdest times.

He did, didn’t he? Just picked up that guital and words tumbled out….sometimes even while sauntering on his horse Champion. Did you listen to the video? So so funny — I just was laughing out loud at it and thinking back on my fun times with Junie Z. After not seeing her for 50+ years, she happened to be in Boston and we reconnected last year. So very much fun to reminisce over a very long lunch. I’m afraid our husbands who had never met each other were a bit bored as we were bent over in laughter! 🙂

Isn’t that the way it always is with those friends? My poor husband just sits in silence while my friend Jo and I rattle on and on and hoot and holler. I know I probably watched too much Gene Autry on Saturday TV as a kid…my grandfather loved him and he was the boss of the tv.

Lillian,
What a sweat piece of ‘wordmanship’ – stashing collective memories in such a whimsical way:)
I was never quite a fan of country music – but I absolutely adored the Lone Ranger (though, it was really was his pristine stallion I adored). I had the flexible-jointed model of Silver and the Lone Ranger figure. Now you have me wondering, what I did with them. I can picture like it was yesterday, playing with my delightful figures!
Your Junie Z tugged at my parental bookish heartstrings. Caroline was captivated by the effervescent lass, Junie B Jones series. When she was little, I took her every Saturday to Barnes and Noble for the morning kiddie activity- and she won the free book every time. And yes, the book for a while was always a Junie B. Jones:)
am:)

Oooh, I never had those “figures” — precursors of today’s action figures? Or do they even call them that anymore? I’m not for country music either and just really chuckled when I heard this piece, remembering Junie Z. My grand daughter has enjoyed the Junie B books too! 🙂

This brought a flood of memories for me, Lillian. We used to listen to an old Lone Ranger tape on trips, and I think I had it just about memorized, at one point.

My husband listened to the Lone Ranger on the radio! 🙂 Although I’d miss the mask that way 🙂
Glad to take you on a trip down memory lane. Smiling I am.

Thanks for that delightful post. As for me, I always had a fondness for the Cisco Kid, who was not always, especially in earlier incarnations, a “saint”.

“….ah Cisco….!” I remember that one! 🙂

The early short films starring Gilbert Roland were a bit different, though.

Sorry, but dusters aren’t favourite movie, to be spending time, watching, Lillian. Give me, a Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant comedy, any day.

hmmmmm not sure what you mean by dusters? These were cowboy shows of my youth (60 years ago!)….and the video is a very very old one I found while writing these memories of childhood. I ADORE Katherine Grand and Cary Grant — did you see Baby? 🙂

Moi, I had a terrible crush on Clint Walker in “Cheyenne” when I was a pre-teen. My husband has rediscovered the series and he watched it every afternoon in the desert. We don’t have it here. Such fun memories. I’m not so much into TV anymore…or crushes, for that matter. Bah!

Is much rather watch a good western (and yes, Lone Ranger counts! ) than listen to western music.

Ditto! Just thought this recording a chuckle — old memories!

I think the Western showed when I was young was “The High Chaparral”… But I guess TV was a lot different here. But since everybody watched them (one TV-channel only) they became part of our games.

Did you have a cowboy hat when you were little? I was always jealous of my friends who had cowboy boots. Black and white saddle shoes just didn’t cut it!
