I am eight syllables of rhyme.
A wannabe decimista
addicted to my barista,
tap dancing through life double-time.
Old age is not a paradigm.
I wore polka-dot underwear
during yesterday’s love affair
with life, eating savory tarts,
cotton candy and red hot hearts.
Life’s too fun for a rocking chair.
Gayle hosts dVerse today and asks us to write a Decima: 10 liner, 8 syllables per line, ABBAACCDDC rhyme scheme. Popular in Puerto Rico, many times decimas are created and sung on the spot in competitions. Think duelling banjoes only with words! Performers are called decimistas. Humorous decimas usually satirize an individual’s weakness or something silly they did. Photo: me a number of years ago at the Boston Pops 4th of July concert. I do love life! 🙂 Also used for NaPoWriMo Day 21.
Ha.. we all are need of the baristas… (perfect rhyme).. and age should not matter.

Ha, you are right….love is too fun for a rocking chair! There are things to do and baristas to meet and multi-colored underwear to search out. Smiles!

Live and love — thankful for eveyr day 🙂
As soon as I read the word “decimista” in the explanation, the word “barista” popped into my head. When that happens, you can’t go any way but lighthearted and fun 🙂

Oh thank you, Gay. I was worried I was being too glib, flippant, humorous. Somehow I’m in this silly stage right now in my writing. So thankful for your reply! 🙂

Thank you! I just loved the sound of the word, decimista! If you google it, you can see some decimistas in competition with each other — they are amazing! Like duelling banjoes with words — impromptu poetry with rules!

Many thanks, Rosemary! Such a lovely compliment to read today – smiling I am.
Confession: I always hated trying to rhyme in my writing — could only think of “roses are red, violets are blue” kind of thing so always did free verse. Then in dVerse, folks mentioned the online rhymind aid (can’t remember its name)….well, that sure opened a whole new door! And it’s quite fun to use — spurs the imagination! 🙂
