Sounds of Night

The Victorian house groans awake
as a full harvest moon winks
through faded window shutters,
thrown wide open.

Smiling dead faces
in wallpapered hallways,
listen from chipped gilt frames
roll their eyes in sepia wonder.

Walls thick with memories
absorb the sounds,
sweet words whispered
mount to passionate moans.

Floorboards squeal
as casters roll in well worn grooves,
planks of wood etched
with scars of love.

This bed of generations,
alive again tonight.

I see where Sounds of Silence would not fit, especially with golden frames rolling their reddish eyes in wonder. What a well defined setting for romance to come alive. Beautifully written!

Thanks Alan! One of the poems assigned to read from Holly a while back, or in Kooser’s book, can’t recall which, had a line about dead faces smiling…..and at church last Sunday, the sermon included the words “thick walls” and voila — one early morning when I do my writing this came out 🙂 I always love seeing your comments … you really have a way with words in your poetry and in your replies. So happy to meet you in this carved out space! Ready for the June Challenge with Holly? Hope you enjoy her as much as I do….

Thank you Lillian! The June challenge half scares me, as school and I did not get along when I was a young lad. However, I am so looking forward to seeing what comes out of the June session, like a kid standing in the middle of a candy store. It sounds exciting, and I look forward to it, thanks to you Lillian for not only saying wonderful things about your mentor but proving it straight up with your wonderful poetry! Also, glad to hear that you know have light and life back into your condo, which of course is an extension of your life. Just in time for your June sessions! Another chapter in your springtime blooming writes of poetry :o)

Not at all like school! Sometimes I followed the prompt exactly, other times the prompt made me “leap” into something else . For me it was all about setting aside the time each morning, all by myself, to let the mind wander and the pen follow. The apprenticeship she runs are great too and include a 45 minute conference midway…I Skype with her. Have fun is the main thing!!

Thank you Lillian. I will give it my best. Holly said she would get a hold of me prior to the course but have not heard back just yet. I am not sure how it works but it should be entertaining. Do I need Skype, or will I just have to call in? Thanks Lillian :o)

Everything is online. You get emails every day. She sets up a Facebook page for the group only. The individual conference is only in the Apprenticeship. At end of June challenge, we send her 4 completed poems – if it’s like the March one I did. She mails back hard copies with critique, comments etc. She’ll probably email everyone today or tomorrow.

    Morning Lillian,
I was trying to peek into the windows, but I was on the computer way too late last night and my eyes are still bugging out this am. 🙂 You’ve managed to combine sultry imagery that is both eerie with sexy – quite a feat!
This brought me back to Transylvania (did I saw brought me back? I was never there I swear).
Though there were those kiddies-fifth graders, a few years back, who asked me if I was a vampire. Apparently if you have long dark hair and arched dark eyebrows you ‘really’ like people 😉
“Twilight” was all the rage at the time…:)
    Geez, I’m gabby this morn…sorry.
    Have a fantastic Friday!
    am:)

“sultry” — great word! So fun to read your meanderings this morning! 🙂 ….and I’m reading this morning (soon to be writing I hope), in a chair, in front of my opened windows and sliding glass doors in our living room. That may sound like nothing, but for the last 6 weeks, this entire area was “tented” off while our condo association was replacing pipes — as in chopping out walls! So no access to fresh air or natural light in our living room or in my study (other place I read and write). Yesterday, tents came down —- HURRAH! You have no idea how much you miss natural light and fresh air until they’re taken away. So, happy I am, like Sam I am! Today, we CLEAN! Yep — dust everywhere and the entire spring season’s pollen on our deck furniture. Busy bee…
PS: I really had to search for the graphic for this one — it fits though.

This image of a well-loved bed reminds me of my parents, who were lovers to the very end of their 60 year marriage. Once when my younger sister and her classmates were sharing a smutty book at school, one of the girls assured them her parents “never did anything that gross!” Melody asked her what she thought they were doing, whispering at night behind their closed bedroom door. The girl was horrified, then thoughtful.

A great poem, Lillian. – Fawn
