The Stuff of Broken Dreams

Broken dreams like shards of glass
crushed by careless once-knowns,

left behind on some godforsaken alley
below rusted tracks of elevated train.
Metal wheels scrape on steel
masses of humanity pass overhead
remnants of hope ignored
in their hurried blur.

Not like sea glass
tumbled smooth by life’s surprises
at rest in damp rippled sand
still warm in setting sun.
Collectors approach, soon to stoop, lift

and gently hold pieces of transformed shape
faded colors aged by time
defined and valued by place.

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Broken.”

    Lillian –
Your poetry is all so very lovely. I find I can always connect to it – this piece for example. My mother-in-law is a stained-glass artist. Back in the day, she put together many a church window. After I read this poem, I looked to my right. On a shelf nearby, is a beautiful lamp my mother-in-law made from sea glass. She’d collected every piece and put it together – the results – stunning.
    Thank you,
    am:)

So glad you stop by 🙂 I’ve always loved hunting for sea glass — and find myself wondering where it began….Sounds like a wonderful lamp! Does it glow through the different shapes and colors when lit?

Yes, it does glow – in gorgeous amber and white-yellows…
Hope you’re enjoying your weekend. What gorgeous weather!

That’s my usual look during our annual two weeks in Provincetown. And in reality, my “logo” (can you tell I worked in a business school?) for this rejuvenatement period of mine. 🙂 You’re the first to comment on it, so many thanks! Hope you’ll stop by again…..always fun to meander over a cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine!

I almost went to Provincetown–a couple times. I think there was a good writing workshop. And then there was a Norman Mailer gig. When you go are you writing, or just watching your toes darken to brown?

The place we stay is three doors down from what used to be Norman Mailer’s place. I just started writing in February — never did before . So this time, yes — I will be sitting on the deck (the waves lap the stairs at high tide) every morning with the beautiful Cape Cod Muse! Did you look at the Cape Cod photos on my site? They have a separate header (above my toes!). You’ll see why so many go there to write and paint — it may entice you! 🙂 Hope you’ll stop by again…so nice to meet you in this cyber spot!

It looks like the ocean is creeping up on the homes in the sand? I have been to Martha’s Vineyard, but not Cape Cod. So many sunsets, so little time.
